Hi there! Welcome back to our blog! We will be introducing Johor Bharu (JB) this week. As many people say that JB is a place that is lack of speciality, and do not have own culture. Today, we are sharing you some traditional things and places in JB so you can have a short getaway on the weekends.

1. Chingay Festival 





Chingay Festival is a Chinese Buddhist culture festival. Five of the Buddhist GOD are going on a parade and are worshiped by a large number of believers on every 20th of January each year. In the beginning, this is just a temple activities based on folk beliefs are now the annual grand activities of Johor Bahru, with tens of thousands of People participate in the parade.




The five clubs of Johor Bahru were dedicated to five gods repectively


i.   Teochew 潮州人God of Heaven FengTian - 奉天上帝 

ii.  Hokkien福建人Emperor HongXian - 洪仙大帝 

iii. Hakka客家人: God of Heaven GanTian - 感天大帝 

iv. Cantonese广肇人Great Emperor HuaGuang - 花光大帝 

v.  Hainan海南人: Grand Master Zhao - 赵大元帅 





Five main procedure of the Event

【March 5 - March 9, 2018】: 



i. Lighting ceremony at Xing Gong temporary shrine《亮灯仪式》

ii. Cleansing Ceremony《洗街清道、请神上轿》

iii. Mounting《众神出銮》

iv. Prelude Parade《众神夜游》

v. The Extravaganza (Night Parade)《众神回銮》

2. Johor Culture Street -Jalan Tan Hiok Nee






This street is a tribute to the Chinese contribution of Tan Hye Khan Tan Hiok Nee (1827-1902) in Johor Bahru, which is truly 'Old Street'. You can found many ancient shop lots here. Recently, there are many new open café. You can discover old ancient shop lots at the same time experience the newly open café shops.

*How to Go? 



Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is a short walk from Johor CIQ and City Square. The journey takes about 10 minutes. In a nutshell, turn left after going out from Starbucks in City Square (back to Starbucks, turn left) and go right along Jalan Wong Ah Fook (toward the beach) to the inside. Or you can choose google map to search for Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.




3. Restoran Kin Hua



It has been voted one of Malaysia's top 100 traditional coffee shops and one of the three oldest stores in Chen Xu Nian Cultural Street. The reason to try is not that there are special meals, but traditional dishes that retain the traditional taste. The Jinhua Tea Room, opened in 1963, is more than half a century old and has no ornate decoration. The most real and most authentic coffee and charcoal toast, this is the ancient taste.

4. Restoran Hua Mui - 华美茶餐食



Restoran Hua Mui is a cafe opened by Hainan people, all exudes a nostalgic atmosphere of Hainan, it is also one of the three old shops of this street, where the dishes mainly Hainan and Malay flavors Mainly, Chinese food and Western food vice, the food provided is quite divers.

4. HIAP JOO BAKERY & BISCUIT FACTORY






This factory was opened in 1919, it uses a traditional way to make bread and cake using wood fired kiln. Hiap Joo sells a great variety of breads and requires a long line up every day to buy the hottest and most sought-after banana cakes and the most popular bread is coconut bread. Yu Ba bread West fruit factory has been listed as one of Johor Bahru's cultural heritage.

6. Restoran Woon Kiang - Kuey Diao Kia






In Teo Chew language Kuey Diao Kia is thinner and slimmer than usual Kuey Diao, so people called it as “The son of Kuey Diao”. This is the representative traditional food of Teo Chew culture. It is the best to eat with braised pork such as pork skin, skinny pork flesh, intestines, salted vegetables and braised eggs.

  • Actually, Keuy Diao Kia is suitable for whole day meal
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and supper arer all suitable.
